Mass Effect 3 Ending

So, after eschewing the internet for any Mass Effect 3 related content last week, I finally got round to finishing the game over the weekend. To say the ending to my generation's most epic sci-fi saga left me in a state of 'WTF' would be an understatement. My initial reactions were something along the lines of 'This can't be it?!'. 'It doesn't make any sense!'. 'Have I missed something?!'. Seeking clarity I immediately made a bee-line for the interwebz in search of answers. What I found was the biggest cacophony of rage against a finale since that directed against TV show Lost. So bellowing was some of the vitriol that I even began to doubt the old adage that 'in space no one can hear you scream'.

Warning, spoilers ahead.

To say Mass Effect 3 deserves the backlash it's currently receiving wouldn't necessarily be false. However, I am also in a minority of fans who think that many of the criticisms against it have been blown out of proportion. As the dust begins to settle, two camps have emerged over the interpretation of the final fifteen-minutes of Shepard's odyssey. On the one hand we have the majority who think it is the biggest cock-up since Hitler decided to invade Russia. As a standalone ending they're right. Taken literally, Mass Effect 3's grand finale is complete nonsense, tantamount to nothing more than lazy writing and/or EA pushing BioWare to meet deadlines. On the other however is a growing minority of fans who have postulated an incredibly compelling theory based on almost recondite 'evidence' given throughout the experience. Dubbed 'Indoctrination Theory', to date it remains the only possible explanation which makes any sense out of an otherwise utterly shitty ending. (Don't watch if you haven't completed the game yet).

Certainly there's a lot of evidence to support 'IT', although there is an equal case to be made that some fans are so desperate for answers that they've gone to elaborate lengths trying to create meaning where there is none. But while accusations of apophenia fly around, no one has yet managed to seriously discredit the theory either. If this interpretation proves to be correct, then BioWare may actually have achieved something so subtle, so insidiously clever, that to even attempt it is preposterously ingenious. It would genuinely represent one of the most adroit meta conclusions in science fiction ever. If, however, the masses are correct in saying BioWare aren't clever enough to have intended this, or were even stupid enough to attempt something so audacious and potentially polarising at risk of ostracising millions of fans, then Mass Effect 3's ending represents the most calamitous fuck-up in videogame history. It's an incredibly fine line to walk. And yet, even if 'IT' was never determined from the start as some suggest (alleged original ending), fans have nevertheless provided BioWare a lifeline to run with for when they finally do decide to comment. It really is that persuasive.

Indeed, since the raucous erupted BioWare have remained silent on the issue. So pissed were some gamers that they managed to set up a fund which raised $70,000 within a couple of days toward getting the ending completely rewritten and released as a patch. What irks most however, including those who subscribe to 'IT', is that for such a genre defining franchise of such epic proportions the final part of the trilogy failed to provide us with any finality. While concerns of overly saccharine endings are noted, there actually would have been nothing wrong with entering Spielbergian realms of sentimentality and predictability by giving Mass Effect 3 a vaguely mawkish ending because it would have satisfied fans regardless. In fact, judging from most fan reactions it seems to be the kind of conclusion many were quietly hoping for. We have been through hell and back with these characters. We've become attached to them. Likewise, they have also left indelible marks on us. We want to know what happened to them. Above all, we want closure.

Despite refusing to comment on any of the speculation BioWare have since gone into full PR mode, stating that they are taking fan criticisms very seriously. While planned DLC is supposed to be set before the final mission, perhaps the vehement backlash against ME3's ending will force them to reconsider that position. While I personally don't want the ending rewritten, I do wish for some lucidity. Above all though I want closure, perhaps in the form of some sort of epilogue. It's the least BioWare could do, and fans may well expect any such addition to be free. Should EA and BioWare decide to charge extra for 'fixing' an 'incomplete' game, then they might find themselves wishing to be harvested by the Reapers rather than face the subsequent shit storm which would likely ensue.

Good News Everybody!

It would seem that irreconcilable differences between videogame distributor Game Group and publishing behemoth Electronic Arts (cunts) has resulted in GAME no longer having exclusive rights to distribute Mass Effect 3.

At the moment it's not clear what the rift between the two actually is, but Edge reports that the problems may stem from the loss of GAME's credit insurance earlier this month, forcing it to pay upfront for future releases. This could well be the beginning of the end for the retailer, after EA also admitted that "the financial position of one of our major European retail partners...could lead to both increased bad debt and lost sales". 

In a memo to staff released by GAME this morning, obtained by IGN, Northern Europe MD Tom Devine confirmed that the largest videogame retailer in the UK will not be stocking Mass Effect 3, or indeed any other EA games after the release of SSX this Friday. Consequently, all pre-orders of Mass Effect 3 made through GAME have been cancelled, and customers have been refunded the full amount plus £5 worth of GAME credit.

So what does this mean for those of us who weren't so lucky to pre-order the Mass Effect 3 Collector's Edition in time? Well, we've been given a second chance as EA were quick to list all their new distributors including Amazon, Play and ShopTo, who now have copies of the Collector's Edition available for pre-order. As soon as I heard I scooted over to Amazon to get mine, but I have to say this still doesn't alleviate the rage I feel toward EA's behaviour regarding exclusivity pacts and downloadable content debacles.

The fact that EA/Bioware had included vital content to Mass Effect 3's story in the Collector's Edition (which had a bunch of other neat stuff), but expected those of us who missed out to download it for an extra $10 made my blood boil. Indeed, the exclusivity deal with GAME meant you couldn't even be extorted by purchasing the Collector's Edition even if you wanted to. Certainly, there was no way I was going to buy a standard edition and pay extra for the DLC while those lucky enough to get a Collectors Edition got it included, albeit at a higher price only with extra goodies thrown in. As a principle I fall into the camp that games should be released in their complete form, not sold in bits and pieces as a way to generate more moneyz. Actually, this guy actually sums it up far better than I.

In many ways I suppose things have kind of worked themselves out in the sense that there is now a choice of distributors from which one can preorder the Collector's Edition. But that still doesn't change my animosity toward GAME, Bioware, and that motherfuckin' evil entity, EA.

At least I suppose that in the end I'll now get my Collector's Edition, but probably at the cost of my soul.

Mass Effect 3: Take Earth Back

Awesome trailer, but couple of things bothering me about the upcoming release of what will surely be this year's most epic gaming experience.

Now I'm not normally one to spend money on finicky little extras games choose to include in their Collectors Editions unless it's something really worth shouting about. But even Mass Effect 3's CE is somewhat taking the piss at an RRP of £70. Doubly galling on account that GAME have exclusive rights to distributing the hallowed tin box.

Deciding to bite the bullet, I trundle over to GAME's online store today to get extorted by this preorder deal on account that I'm a purest and own the CE's of Mass Effect's 1 and 2, only to find that they have sold out of the 360 version. I have never, EVER experienced this before.

So now I'm angry. Angry that I won't have access to content such as extra squadmates and bonus levels which should come standard in the original version of the game. As Mass Effect is an experience for me, this 'rationing' of the CE locks off what I consider to be 'vital' content, something that I was willing to begrudgingly pay for but now cannot because of Bioware's Molotov-Ribbentrop pact with GAME. Not only that, but due to GAME having 'exclusive' rights to the CE it means that there is no pricing competition which allows them to charge more for a product which would otherwise fall in the realms of around £60 max.

It's actually ridiculous that customers are expected to pay for content already written. But then why would they release a final version with everything in it when there's money to be made by pawning bits of it off as 'bonus content'? Oh right, they do - a year later when the last shmucks have caved into the marketing ploy.

As such, as much as I do love Mass Effect, I will be holding out this year until I can get a decent priced version of the CE. And only then because the completist in me compels me to ignore logic. Fuck you, Bioware. Fuck you, GAME. Fuck you, EA.
