Chinese broadcaster Now TV unveil their Euro 2012 advert, juxtaposing bloodshed and war in Europe with some images of a football match. I don't even know where to begin...

North Korea's happiness index rank: China top, US bottom

May 28, 2011 02:07 AM EDT
A Chinese media, Chaoxian.com.cn, reported on Thursday that North Korea's Chosun Central TV recently released the survey result of a 'Happiness Index (Gross National Happiness) of each nation,' which was conducted in North Korea.

According to the index, the happiest country in the world is China and North Korea is ranked no. 2. Interestingly, South Korea is ranked No.152 and the U.S. ranks last at No.203.

Chaoxian.com.cn sarcastically commented that "North Korea gladly gave the no. 1 spot to China and North Korea itself ranked no. 2. North Korea must be the happiest country in the universe."

China scored 100 points and was selected as the country where the happiest people live in and North Korea with 98 points, ranked at no. 2.

The top five rankings include Cuba (no. 3, 93 points), Iran (no.4, 88 points), and Venezuela (no.5, 85 points). South Korea, with 18 points, was placed at no.152 and the U.S. ranked no. 203 with its score not marked.

Free North Korea Broadcast, a South Korea based broadcast, commented that the North Koreans who are completely brainwashed, repeatedly proclaim "We are the happiest people in the world. I will trust ‘the General’ and always follow him only."

Some readers said the ranking is wrong as it seems to survey only those people who do not know the world. Therefore, precisely speaking, the happiness index of North Korea should be not no. 2 but no. 1 in their survey. Some even commented that the those who voted were not the common people but those who held power and authority in the government of North Korea.

Many Chinese have voiced their comments on the survey. Some of them include:

This happiness index refers to the government officials' happiness index in every country. - Leshanman

I seriously doubt on the authenticity of this rank and the IQ of the North Korean people. - taiyangfan

It's a good joke! - zengfugui

(China)is the first? Maybe it means the last? Why USA ranks 203? - bond99

Hehe, Talk sheer nonsense ... - xiaoxia

There is a minus before the rank number. It's actually - 100. - yueselansha

Kim Jong Il is a real sycophant today. - baimaojin

Chinese Construction

This is an incredible example of modern construction methods. It took just six days for Chinese workers to assemble the 'Ark Hotel' in Changsha, a 15-storey, sound-proofed, thermal-insulated, level 9 Earthquake-resistant building, complete with cabling and three-pane windows.

The construction modules were all prefabricated in a factory, making it merely a case of slotting the bits together. It is an ideal display of optimal energy, material, environmental and time efficiency, not to say far cheaper than conventional construction methods. And this was all said to be achieved with 1% construction waste. It is the first example of a 'Sustainable Building' in the world.

And on the seventh day, the Chinese ended their work which they had made; and they rested.

Every Nuclear Explosion, 1945 -1998

A hypnotic and mesmerising video by artist Isao Hashimoto charting every nuclear explosion between 1945 to 1998. It's an eerie spectacle and even with the numbers displayed on the screen a difficult concept to grasp. Have we really exploded that much nuclear ordnance in our atmosphere? As Mark Wilson from Gizmodo says, "As more and more countries gain nuclear technologies, the map becomes a terrifying game of Simon. By the end, it feels remarkable that we never encountered a game over...as of yet".

Bape Ghostbusters Trainers

When these bad boys first caught my eye I knew I had to have them. So you can imagine my delight when I thought I'd struck gold and found a pair of Bathing Ape's limited edition Ghostbuster shoes on eBay for only £45. The above is what the seller was advertising, so, I ordered myself a white pair. Today they arrived, and this is what they sent me.

Now the differences at first may be minor with regards to the actual shoe. But the first tell-tale sign that these are counterfeits is the box. It is a 'regular' Bathing Ape box, and in battered condition I might add. It is contrary to the limited edition box they should have arrived in, pictured above. And yes, they were advertised as brand new, having never been worn. Second sign is the shoe itself. You will see on the 'official version pictured the head of the ghost touches the tip of the shooting star. On mine, pictured above the head is clearly well underneath the star. Further attention was drawn to the sole of the trainer, as pictured right, which looks either incomplete or worn. Being supposedly new it shouldn't have been the latter. So I did some snooping on other sellers offering the same product on eBay and my PKE meter found pictures of someone who owns a pair, pictured below.

With the two shown side-by-side it becomes more obvious where the inconsistencies lie. The box and the ghost's head are clearly different. After searching for more pictures of what 'should be', I came across another promotional photo which more or less confirmed them as fakes. If you look at the sole on my shoe compared to that pictured on the right the information printed is different. I suppose in retrospect I was a bit naive to think that finding a pair of $200 shoes on eBay being sold by some kid in China (my first clue perhaps) for £45 was a good deal. Since then I have sent the seller a message (which I hope babelfish will translate adequately for him) asking for my money back. If I don't get a response by Monday I'll take the matter up with eBay. God damnit! And they're such awesome shoes as well! Bloody fake Chinese tat. (cries) ='(
